Southern Drive makes you wanna "Dance"Southern Drive can rock. But don’t try too hard to classify their sound; the next song will be different. Influenced by red dirt, Texas country, good ol’ rock ‘n roll, and even a little punk, lead singer Donnie Rex calls their sound Rock Americana. Whatever you want to call it, fans dig it. The band’s current album Sunland Radio is an extension of that Southern Drive style that fans fell in love with on the 2008 album Take a Ride. The radio single “Dance” is a toe-tapping, head-bobbing blend of bluegrass, Cajun, and storytelling that fans can’t get enough of. Sunland Radio is just what you expect from Southern Drive, taking fans on a whirlwind tour through the roots of country and turning them into loyal followers.
The boys are heading back to the studio to work on their third album due out in early 2012. Expect that same Southern Drive sound with some hard-driving beats, killer lead guitar and, of course, a few great country songs sure to get you on the dance floor.
Founded as an acoustic duo in 2006, this now four-piece Dallas band knows how to draw a crowd. Hailing from Oklahoma, front man Donnie Rex is proud of his roots but is a rock ‘n roll gypsy, logging as many hours on the road as time will allow. Russell Wilson on bass and back-up vocals brings layered harmonies and keeps these boys together.
Joining the band in June 2011 are drummer Jose Juan Gutierrez and lead guitar player Clint Coleman. After several years as a key member of the University of North Texas drum corps and drummer in a number of bands in the Denton area, Jose is making a name for himself in the Dallas music scene.
Together, these guys make up a band that you need to keep on your musical radar. They are going places, especially with their plans for the new album and an aggressive road tour in 2012. When asked what’s next for the band, Donnie says with a broad smile, “Polish our live show with the new line-up which has already been turning heads, start production on the new album, and then hit the road to bring our songs to the fans.” Look for Southern Drive to break beyond the Texas/Oklahoma borders. Whether it’s a small town bar or a 3,000 seat venue, fans will get an amazing live show sure to bring you to your feet. You can check out Southern Drive at www.southern-drive.com.
